A steepish bank created by road builders some years ago (and probably scraped off since then) has been colonized by moss and several lichens, mostly Cladonias. These are among the fastest-growing lichens, still averaging only between 5 and 11 mm. a year... -

Starting with a frond of that red bracken.
Cladonia lichens on a stump, bright green in the rain. With a dead cedar leaf, rust brown. And Douglas-fir needles. -

Not much to see, I said. Fog and rain and half-hidden trees. Grey overhead, dark shadows around me. Not much to look at.
I was mistaken. As long as I was driving, eyes mostly on the road ahead, trees sliding by in the mist, I was really half blind. To see more, you have to slow down. Better still, stop.... -
