The first night of this play was extremely well attended: in Guildford there seems to be a healthy appetite for the airing of royal “dirty linen”. This play has skeletons aplenty, not so much in the cupboard as hung out on full public view....

Simon Reade’s adaptation of this novel is admirable and much of the pleasure in the evening’s entertainment springs from his following and exploiting Forster’s dialogue.
The opening scene is set behind tall Florentine shutters; behind these the world of Florence, strange and suspicious to the English visitors, works its spell....

I saw this classic Agatha Christie whodunit in the West End, London, at a time when it was considered remarkable to be the longest-running play still being performed. That was in 1965, some phenomenal 51 years ago! Can one justify that it is still drawing...
