Ahhh Rome.....taking the train from Civitavecchia
When you dock in Civitavecchia , Most people will want to go to Rome....You can take a ships tour..(very expensive, big buses full of people, but safe and easy peasy..) OR, you can be adventuresome, and hop on a train and see Rome on your own! OF COURSE...

Lucca, Oh Lucca.....an amazing Italian walled city
If you've done Pisa, Florence, and want a lovely stress free Port day.....Take the train, or hire a cab to take you to Lucca.....a lovely walled city, just a few miles from Pisa....
If fact, it is an easily combined trip...Pisa and Lucca.
The cab cost 100 Euros r/t, shared by 8 of us..... an easily affordable tour. It is about an hour from the port, where you will drive thru some lovely Tuscan countryside!... -

Ancient Istanbul......Oh what a time we had!
Months before we left on our 6 week adventure. we started pricing flights home from Rome.....Turkish air was the most reasonable, and when we found out that we could layover in Istanbul for 3 days for only 60 bucks more...well.....it was a no brainer...
